Explore the natural history of Southern California at the Natural History Museum (theNAT) in San Diego. Museum Showcases are full of pieces: from fossils to dinosaur bones, strange books and live animals. There is something for everyone at theNAT, the flagship museum located in Balboa Park.
The most recent exhibition at the Nat is a tour of it’s oldest Museum Showcases, where species and remains of millions of pieces coexist.
Unshelved
Have you ever wondered what happens behind the building of The Nat? It is a very large building because it contains more than 8 million animal specimens.
In the building there are storage areas under and behind the walls of the exhibition area. This year we are giving visitors a tour behind our new exhibition entitled: “Unshelved, Cool Stuff from Storage”. The exhibition is included with general admission and is free for members.
A look behind the scenes in our storage areas is like a representative sample of the diversity of nature itself. The specimens in the Museum’s properties, which are conserved and cataloged meticulously, are curated by several departments that make up the Biodiversity Research Center of the Californias (BRCC).
Due to the large size of our collection, we have an abundance of riches, although most of specimens never see the light of day.
